Okay, okay: another failure to update on time. If you think about it, though, I'm actually making up for posting on Thursday afternoon last week; now the two kind of even out. Anyway, without further ado:
1) This week continued my family's trend of a revolving door of guests. My grandparents came down from up north for the first time in two years. Our attempts to beat the heat are responsible for the majority of items included in this list. If you're anything like me, this list makes braving yet another week in the upper 90s worth it. If this random assortment of things drives you crazy, blame yet another week in the upper 90s and 97% humidity. You have to survive the heat somehow!
2) Considering that I come from an entire family of movie lovers, it's hardly surprising that we spent the better part of one afternoon watching Despicable Me. What was surprising was how much everyone enjoyed it, especially Yours Truly. Perhaps it was the much-replicated story of orphan girls winning over gruff older men--Annie, anyone? Or maybe it was just the minions who lurked and giggled in the background. Either way, this is by far one of my favorite movies of the summer, even over the equally-entertaining Toy Story 3. As much as I love Buzz and Woody, it's nice to experience a completely new animated world every once in a while.
3) Was anyone else completely in love with Bethenny Getting Married? this week? Granted, watching someone's water break on national tv is VERY awkward, but there was something kind of charming about it all the same. Yet again, I was struck by how much the Hoppy's really do care about each other, how excited they are about the baby, and about how real and truly down to earth Bethenny is. She was my favorite housewife on the Real Housewives of New York City because of her straight-forward, "what you see is what you get" persona, and her new series proves that she hasn't strayed. I just can't wait to see more of baby Bryn!
4) Being a recovering Harry Potter fanatic, I stumbled on Team Starkid's newest show "A Very Potter Sequel" the day it came out. For those of you who don't know, Team Starkid is a group of University of Michigan theatre graduates who became a cyber sensation in 2009 after they posted the entirety of "A Very Potter Musical" on YouTube. The parody is hysterical, partly because of the brilliant acting and score, and partly because of the loyal but hysterical lens through which the series is viewed. "A Very Potter Sequel" is equally entertaining, if slightly more crass, than the original, mostly due to the introduction of alcoholic Remus Lupin. Still, anyone who is remotely familiar with the Harry Potter franchise will find something to laugh about in the two hour show. Just exercise caution if there are little kids around.
5) This week's last entry has to look ahead to Monday night and the Bachelorette's "Men Tell All" special on ABC. Granted, these are usually my least favorite episodes of the season due to lack of drama and too many commercials, but this season's contestants might actually make it bearable. Between raging alcoholic Craig who was--thankfully--given the boot early on, two-timing Justin--or should I say Rated Self-Absorbed?--and the alternately egocentric and somehow still pitiful Frank, there's more than enough to fill an hour time slot. Let's just hope that ABC doesn't insist on dragging the thing out for a full two hours. But who am I kidding? The idea of getting any cable network to show restraint is just wishful thinking.
